World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items are an essential part of gearing up your character. Upgrades increase the damage of your item and the ability to enchant.
They also offer bonuses and improvements. They are available by contacting the Blacksmith.
Players can recycle any item by pressing the upgrade button on it. Every item recycled adds a level to the gauge of upgrade.
Weapons
When the weapon is upgraded it will gain an initial damage bonus as well as a scaling factor that influences other stats. The weapon may also gain a variety of upgrade components that offer additional features or effects, and some have distinctive cosmetic effects. These upgrades can be slotted into armor, weapons, trinkets, and gathering tools. Most require that the equipment have an available upgrade slot and meet certain requirements. Once a weapon or armor piece has an upgrade component in it, it is able to be upgraded however the prior upgrade will be destroyed (except for legendary equipment and upgrades). Upgrade components can be retrieved using a Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool, or using a high-tier salvage tool on the item itself.
A weapon can also be upgraded to include a Calibration attribute that increases certain stats, for example Weakspot damage or Crit Rate. This is accomplished through the Gear Workbench interaction menu. This can be done four times depending on the weapon's level.
When the weapon reaches its maximum level of improvement, it can then be modified to give different bonuses and effects or improve specific stats. Several of these upgrades can be applied simultaneously, and the effects differ based on the quality of the weapon.
There are two Blacksmiths in the game that can perform these upgrades: Blacksmith Hewg in the Church of Elleh hub area and Smithing Master Iji on the Road to the Manor Site of Grace. Both require different upgrade materials: Smithing Stones for standard weapons and Somber Smithing Stones for modifying the damage that a weapon inflicts.
Generally, it is recommended to upgrade weapon damage first, then armour defense, and then the other secondary stats that are required by your build. In particular, it's common to see melee druids enhancing their weapon prior to any other gear, as this will increase DPS. item upgrades is especially applicable to enchantments, which are extremely efficient in increasing the weapon's damage and other stats.
Armor
Item Upgrades allow players to improve the base stats of certain pieces of armor weapons, trinkets, trinkets and gathering tools. These upgrades can also give additional effects, like more damage or an enhancement to the appearance of. Item upgrades can be obtained through crafting, buying from NPC vendors, in loot drops, or as rewards for quests.
The armor can be upgraded by visiting the Armorer NPC, and spending the appropriate currency. In the majority of cases, a piece of armor will be upgraded to the next level after an upgrade is applied. This is possible for any type of armor, though certain items are not upgradeable in any way (such as the starter armor in Great Sky Island).
Most armor upgrades offer only a slight increase in the item's defense or strength. Some upgrade components, however can lead to significant increases in defense or strength. This is particularly the case when upgrading epic items.
Some upgrades provide special abilities which can be activated when wearing armor. These abilities can be very useful in combat. For instance they can boost the speed of attack or block. Certain upgrades can have effect that are passive and can be useful, such as reducing damage while wearing armor, or increasing the chance to dodge an attack.
Depending on the type of armor, upgrading an item could require multiple tries. For example for instance, if a player wants to upgrade a Steelclash armor to Dragonscale, the first attempt will result in a brand new piece of Dragonscale with a base defense between the ages of 59-67. The second attempt would result in a new Dragonscale armor with an initial defense of 67-77 and it goes on.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild lets players upgrade their armor sets to level 4. To upgrade their armor players must visit the four Great Fairy Fountains located in the game. Each location has a fair with a great power that can change the quality of an item of armor for you.

Contrary to popular belief armor isn't useless in The Division 2. The reality is that certain armors have very significant increases in poison, curse, fire or magical damage reduction, making them very useful for certain builds. There are also ways to improve armor stats beyond the use of upgradeable armor, such as the engineer trait that increases armor penetration or the challenger trait to reduce total weight.
